Xbox 360, Kinect and the challenge of new paradigms.

Kinect

One of the most challenging and rewarding things about working on the ESPN on Xbox team is dealing with multiple user interface models. No longer are users confined to using just the good old Xbox 360 controller. There is now the media remote and the amazing new Kinect.

Designing for the Kinect has been nuts. The difference in restrictions and advantages the Kinect offers are endless. At every turn we must ask ourselves if it is working in all three interfaces and whether or not we need to sacrifice usability in some areas for others.

This balancing act brings something to the surface though. It challenges us to make an interface which is truly usable, simple and understandable. It’s going to be fun watching all of the different applications utilize the Kinect in different and innovative ways. Check out the new Xbox 360 dashboard for the latest and greatest.

Just thought I would share this video. It’s pretty amazing, try pausing it at any moment. Frame by frame it totally looks like its hand painted.

What I’ve been up to.

October 9th, 2011

I’m finally back in Seattle and started working at Microsoft. I joined the ESPN for Xbox team back in June and have been going full force ever since. I never thought I would end up doing anything in the video game industry but so far I am really enjoying it. The process, freedom and challenge of designing for such a big market and client is pretty awesome.

I was hired on as a “2D Production Artist” but have been doing everything from comps to UX flow design. I’ve created bumpers for advertising, designed a new bottom line ticker and contributed to a lot of behind the scenes stuff too. The amount I am learning from this job is astounding, it’s also nice to work with such seasoned professionals.

Anyways we released our new ESPN 2.0 back on August 25 and its been going strong ever since. Look for an update to my portfolio in the near future which features my new work on this application.

New Music Video

Canine Stereo “RCU Remix” from John Bradley on Vimeo.

Canine Stereo “RCU Remix”

First music video for local group Canine Stereo (formerly known as TRS).

Directed, shot and edited by John C. Bradley.
Shot on a Canon T2i with a Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens.
Edited and graded in Adobe Premiere Pro.
All video shot at 1920×1080 24p

Thanks to Jules and Julien who asked me to do this for them it was fun. This is my first music video and I think it turned out pretty ok. We didn’t want to do much in terms of a story line or meaning behind the video. Just show them doing the song. Syncing the audio with their mouths was a bit of a pain but not as bad as I thought it would be. Getting the color right was a bit more time consuming though.

Back To School

September 22nd, 2010

Started my senior year today and it should be a good year. New roommate, new apartment and 17 credits a quarter. Hopefully I will be taking some ISP classes where I can create some new design stuff and videos. Look out for the music video for Canine Stereo which I directed, shot and edited. Its still a WIP but I hope to have it completed soon.

Taco Bauer

I was wanting to practice some after effects and shooting video with guns on camera. I’m am thinking of trying to do an action short but who knows. The first video is the ungraded, no special effects, straight from the camera edit. The second video has been graded using Premier Pro and had special effects applied in After Effects.

It was pretty time consuming getting the muzzle flashes, lighting and casings but it was totally worth the effort.

Inhale

We were filming an “Intro” type video for my video production team class that featured this doll being kidnapped and us saving it from an explosive situation. The shoot was fun and turned out pretty good. Afterward while some other class mates were editing the video we thought we would shoot baby doing some not so baby things. Ended up just sitting outside having Eric take a smoke break with baby. Too funny, the cigarette fit perfectly in the baby’s mouth. I really liked the lighting for these shots. Just bright enough and soft enough but still able to maintain some nice deep shadows. The footage is really shaky though, I forgot to bring my shoulder mount but its still a pretty fun video.

Simply beautiful work

May 5th, 2010

From the day I first saw this short film by Philip Bloom I have been in love with his work. The emotions and shear beauty of this piece are astounding.  Just last weekend I sold my old Nikon d40 and purchased a Canon T2i which should be here tomorrow. The video these new DSLR’s can shoot is ridiculous and I can only hope to be on par with Mr. Philip Bloom when I start shooting with mine.

First ever post and some crows.

May 5th, 2010

Hey, it’s my first post. I’ve spent the last couple of days wrestling with the theme trying to get it just right and I’ve finally got it to a point that is acceptable. More changes to come though.

I will primarily be using this blog to post creative endeavors, opinions, interesting links, videos, photos, reviews and whatever other random stuff I come up with.

Below is a photo of some crows(duh!) I took about two weeks ago while waiting for the bus. This quarter I’ve been taking a field ornithology class and my interest in birds has grown quite a bit. Like typography before, I find my self trying to I.D. them constantly while being out and about. Crows though are rather fascinating and the more I learn about them, the more I find them to be rather awesome. Being very social birds I thought this photo brought a very humanistic look at the lives of crows and how they can experience love and hate just like the rest of us.
